Daily Life- Korean Medical Facilities

WESTERN MEDICINE

Hospitals

Daegu has several large hospitals, including public, private, and university. The large hospitals generally offer foreign language services by appointment or specific office hours. When first arriving at a medical center, go to the front desk and the receptionist will ask if this is your first time or if you have been to that facility previously. If it is your first time, you will be asked to fill out a very simple form asking your name, address, and alien registration number. After returning the paper to the desk, you will be asked why you are seeking medical treatment and then will be told to sit and wait. When your name is called, simply follow where you are told to go in order to speak with the doctor. Depending on the size of the hospital the wait can be from 10 minutes to over an hour if seeking treatment at one of the larger hospitals rather than a clinic.

The following hospitals have either an international center or foreign language services:

Fatima Hospital 파티마병원 (1688-7770 / 99, Ayang-ro, Dong-gu, Daegu)

Daegu Catholic University Medical Center 대구가톨릭대학병원 (1688-0077 / 33, Duryugongwon-ro 17-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu)

Kyungpook National University Hospital 경북대학교병원 (1666-5114 / 130, Dongdeok-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu)

Yeungnam University Hospital 영남대학교병원 (1522-3114 / 170, Hyeonchung-ro, Nam-gu, Daegu)

Clinics

In addition to large hospitals which house the various departments for treatment, there is also a variety of clinics which specialize in certain departments. While the English speaking ability in these clinics can vary greatly, they are convenient for quick trips to see the doctor. Wait times are generally quite short and easier to navigate. The specialized clinics are listed below.

Dental
The national health insurance allows for one dental cleaning per year which can be scheduled at any dental clinic. The term for a cleaning in Korean is “Scaling 스케일링.” There is one dental clinic located in Beomeo dong with highly proficient English speakers and caters to foreign clients.

Traditional Clinics

Many Koreans will often go to a traditional medicine clinic for everyday aches and pains and this is an option for foreigners in Daegu as well. While there are several services available, the English speaking skills of the staff and doctors are generally very limited. Traditional medicine is covered under the national health insurance system so you can be processed the same as any western medical center. Services available include acupuncture, cupping, and traditional medicine after consultation.

If you seek treatment for aches and pains, simply go to a clinic and tell the receptionist which part of your body hurts. They will bring you to a room and take care of you from there. If you seek to take traditional medicine, it is best to go with someone who can speak Korean as you will need to have a consultation with the doctor.
